Caring for your hands and feet during chemotherapy

Patients receiving certain chemotherapeutic agent develop what is known as Hand-Foot Syndrome or Palmar-Plantar Erythrodysesthesia.

Hand foot syndrome is a condition that causes redness, swelling and pain on the palms, and soles of the feet. You may even experience blister and it may also appear on your knees and elbows.

What causes hand-foot syndrome?

Several cancer drugs cause hand foot syndrome. Some of these include Capecitabine (Xeloda), Docetaxel (Taxotere), Doxorubicin, Fluorouracil (5-FU) just to list a few. These agents affect the skin cells and blood vessels and once it is out of the blood vessels in damages the surrounding tissue. Managing hand-foot syndrome

    • Wear loose fitting clothing and tight-fitting shoes so your skin is expose to air

What can you do to help manage hand foot syndrome?

    • Talk with your health care team for recommendations
    • Topical pain relievers can be helpful
